Selected Techniques for Cutting SOx Emissions in Maritime Industry

نویسندگان

چکیده

Burning fuels with high sulfur content leads to SOx emissions, especially SO2, which various environmental and health problems. The maritime sector is responsible for 13% of the global anthropogenic emissions SO2. Thus, International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued a protocol, known as MARPOL Annex VI, aims further limit SO2 derived from ships along NOx, particulate matter volatile organic compound emissions. This led ship owners operators choose between more expensive low or apply DeSOx solution, still allows them use cheapest heavy fuel oil. current work reviews state-of-the-art solutions both land-based sector. Next, it proposes an alternative cheaper environmentally friendly solution based on selective reduction elemental by utilizing catalytic converter metal oxides, similar ones used in automotive industry. Finally, most promising oxide catalysts reported literature towards sulfur.

Cardiovascular diseases in the modern maritime industry

Acute cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main natural causes of death in industrialized countries — both at sea and on land. Seafarers face very specific job-related cardiac risk factors, such as time pressure, long working hours, or high stress factors onboard [1, 2]. Taking into consideration the healthy worker effect of seafarers, cardiac risk factors are shown to occur slightly more freq...
